For the Sake of the Cake!

"I want a two-tiered cake with a soccer theme.  Chocolate cake with pastry-filling between the layers, a butter-cream blue frosting on the tiers with half a soccer ball on top.  They'll probably need to use fondant on the soccer ball.  I found a few photos online that we can use as examples ...."

It's quite clear that my soon-to-be 13 year old has been watching "Cake Boss" and now she speaks the language of cakes.  Sure enough, we stopped at our local cake shop, Catie's Cafe, and they knew exactly what Maea was describing.

We celebrated Maea's 13th birthday a little early this year because her birthday falls over Labor Day weekend and it sometimes gets lost in the back-to-school shuffle and the final throes of the "official last weekend of summer".

Maea cradled the cake on her lap as we drove home.  "Can't you drive any smoother?!?" she asked as I eased over railroad tracks at a crossing.  At every corner she would suck in her breath and create a halo around the cake with her arms in case it would topple.  Once home, we removed a shelf from the frig so it could have it's own safe place, to await her party, and then I zipped back to work.  Later, when I got home, I found this note on the frig from Maea. :)
